How to easily read smart meters
Until suppliers can connect remotely with all the smart meters installed by other suppliers from mid 2019 at the earliest. Until then, you will need to provide readings when you switch to Green Network Energy with a Smart Meter.
Normally both gas and electricity smart meters have a numerical keypad. Here’s how to get your latest reading(s).
If you have a standard (one rate) tariff
Press 9 on the keypad. Your smart meter screen will show a series of letters: IMP KWH. You’ll see 8 digits (e.g. 0001234.5) followed by kWh at the bottom right of the screen.
This figure is your latest reading – if you’re giving a reading to your energy provider, they only need the first 7 digits.
Smart electricity meters on Economy 7
Your smart meter shows separate readings for your off-peak and daytime use.
Press 6 on the keypad until you see 'IMP R01' followed by 8 digits - this is your night/off peak/low reading.
Press 6 again until you see 'IMP R02' followed by 8 digits - this is your day/peak/normal reading.
For both readings, we only need the non-decimal numbers, normally the first seven digits (e.g. 0012345.6 the reading would be 0012345)
Some meters only display day readings during the day, and night readings during the night period. We will need both readings.
Smart gas meters
Press 9 on the keypad. VOLUME will appear on your smart meter screen.
You’ll see 6 digits (e.g. 00123.4) followed by an ‘m3’ symbol at the bottom right of the screen.
This figure is your latest reading – you only need to provide the first five digits before the decimal place.
What if your Smart Meter doesn’t have a key pad?
Your smart meter might have a green button:
Press the green button until you see 'TOTAL ACT IMPORT' until a reading appears, this is your reading.
Your smart meter might have red and black buttons:
Press the red button until you see 'CREDIT ON' followed by 'METER INDEX' and then the readings. For electricity, it will show 'kWH' and for gas it will show 'm3'.
Your smart meter may just have a screen:
The screen will cycle through screens, you will need to take the reading that starts with R1.
Your Smart meter might have the buttons A and B:
Press the button B until you see 'TOTAL ACTIVE IMPORT' and the reading. For electricity, it will show 'kWh' and for gas it will show 'm3'.
