Your smart meter installation 

When will Green Network Energy install smart meters? 

To make sure everything runs smoothly, we are currently testing our first smart meter installations with a small group of customers. Once we are happy with the results, we will ramp up the installations.

All of our customers will be offered a smart meter by the end of 2020, so get ready to go smart!

How can I get a smart meter? 

Once we are ready to start installing, we will get in touch with you. We will offer smart meters to all of our customers by the end of 2020.

Will it cost me anything to install a smart meter? 

No, there is no additional charge to have a smart meter installed.

What will happen during the smart meter installation process? 

After arranging a time and date, one of our friendly installers will come to your home to replace your existing meter(s) with the new smart meters. Prior to the installation, you will need to ensure that the area around your meter is clear and easily accessible.  

The installer will then carry out a visual safety inspection. This is to identify any problems like faulty wiring or a faulty boiler. When they are installing your smart meter, your energy supply will be turned off for around 30-45 minutes.  

When the installer has finished installing your smart meter they will also set up an in-home display. This screen shows you how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence, in near real time. They will explain how you can use your in-home display to understand and control your energy usage. They can provide you with some further advice on how you can save energy.  


Green Network Energy is signed up to the Smart Metering Installation Code of Practice (SMICoP). This means you can be sure that our installers are trained and follow the industry’s best practice when they carry out the installation.

How long will the smart meter installation take? 

We’re pretty quick when it comes to the smart meter installation. 

A smart meter installation for both an electric and a gas meter will normally be completed within two hours. If just an electric meter is being installed, it will normally take between one to one and a half hours. 

I have a prepayment meter, can I have a smart meter? 

Bear with us. We can’t currently offer smart meters to customers with a prepayment meter but we expect to be able to offer smart prepayment functionality later in 2019. This will allow prepayment customers to top-up in extra ways, such as through our website.  

I rent my home, do I need my landlord’s permission to have a smart meter?  

If you pay the energy bills and they are addressed to you then you don’t need your landlord’s permission to have smart meters installed. However, we do recommend that you inform them first so that they are aware you’re planning to get one. If your landlord is responsible for paying the energy bills then they will need to arrange the installation.
